Contributing to Research on Faith, Mental Health, and Muslim Communities
At Maryam Support Line, we believe that supporting Muslim women effectively requires not only compassion and lived experience, but also a commitment to learning, evidence, and understanding the realities faced by our communities.
We were therefore pleased to contribute to a recent research project led by Equi exploring the relationship between faith, mental health, and support-seeking behaviours within Muslim communities.
The report, Beyond the Clinic: Faith, Young People and Mental Health, examines how faith influences mental wellbeing, the barriers some individuals face when accessing support, and the important role that community organisations, faith-based services, and culturally sensitive approaches can play in improving mental health outcomes.
As a charity that speaks to Muslim women every day, many of the themes explored in the research resonate with what we hear through our own listening service. The findings reinforce the importance of creating safe, non-judgemental spaces where people feel heard, understood, and supported in a way that respects both their faith and lived experiences.
